Craniosacral therapy

Cranio - "The Tao of bodywork"

We often think we need to do all sorts of things to “fix” our bodies. But what if the body can actually do it very well on its own, and all it really needs is a moment of undivided attention?

Well, if it where that simple, why do I need a therapist? You might ask yourself.

For sure it is simple- but not easy. Unfortunately, feeling is something many of us have forgotten. Especially the places where we hold tension or unprocessed emotions can be hard to feel on your own — let alone stay present there.

The breath of the nervous system

Cranio works with the rhythms in your body. You know, of course, the rhythm of your breath and your heartbeat. But did you know your nervous system also has its own rhythm? Its own “breathing”? The spine lengthens slightly, and the skull bones move just a little outward, then settle back again. Very subtle, yet perceptible. This wave-like movement, a bit like the ebb and flow of the tide, is roughly twice as slow as your breath and helps refresh the fluids in your nervous system and brain. It’s called the craniosacral rhythm, named after the movement between the cranium and sacrum, and was discovered by two osteopaths, William G. Sutherland and John Upledger.

You can imagine that this rhythm is very important for the proper functioning of your body and mind. When it flows freely, you feel vital and at ease in your body. However, for various reasons, blockages can arise that limit the movement of this rhythm — physical, mental, or emotional trauma. Yes, even mental and emotional “blows” have a physical impact on your body. This impact often shows up as stiffness in the connective tissue, which restricts smooth movement and the flow of the rhythm.

The intention of craniosacral work is to create space — space for the full potential of your body and for you as a person. By bringing attention to the rhythm and to the areas where disruptions or blockages exist, the body is invited to bring them back into movement. The blockages naturally dissolve, creating more space. This can feel like a great relief.
